Occurs in nature as the mineral iodargirita. Birefringent transparent lemon-yellow hexagonal prisms or birefringent red octahedrons. m.p. = 560 ° C (with decomposition).

Diamagnetic. Slightly soluble in water, soluble in concentrated hydriodic acid, alkali metal iodides. Under the influence of light is decomposing into constituent elements of silver iodide. Molar conductivity at infinite dilution at 25 ° C is equal to 138.7 Cm.sm2/mol.
